Who ARE these people?

Retail hell

Yikes. This day has flown by, mainly because we've had terrible customer service karma all day long.

I woke up with a big ol' headache, so I stayed and slept while Beloved went to church. But this put us way behind schedule when it came to going to the Usual Place for breakfast. Usual Place was too crowded, so after a bit of parking lot surveying, we ended up at Denny's. Food was good. It took TWENTY MINUTES to pay. I was about to motion to Beloved to come back, we'd put a twenty on the table (bill + 20% tip, don't worry) and just go, but the line started to move. When we got in the car, he explained what happened. "You know that loud bunch of people we didn't want to sit next to?" "Yeah". "Well, they were checking out and apparently everyone was paying separately, and they were having trouble figuring out who owed what". headgoboomhere. He said it came to 80 some dollars. (for two couple with assorted children) Over an 80 dollar check, they were doing the "No, I didn't have coke, I had a water, so I'm not paying for soda" dance while the ENTIRE LOBBY was full of people who wanted to pay their damn bills and get on with their lives. And they were CLUELESS. If *I* had been in that party, I would have been so embarassed I would have grabbed that check and been done with it. That kind of haggling is SO unattractive, and needs to be done at the table, NOT with 10 people who DO have their shit together in line behind you.

Then, it was on to Home Depot. Beloved needs a new garage door before he can sell his house. This should have been the quickest, easiest 800 buck transaction they had all day. We found the counter where they do that...and our attitude was "here are the measurements, we want the least expensive door, a new opener, here's the Home Depot charge. Thanks. Bye". No. It took half an hour. Poor guy ringing us up must have been new. After that, we went and bought some other stuff....tomato food, wood filler, draino, and went to check out. The invoice for the door wouldn't ring up. It took us ten minutes (at least)and two trips by the head cashier to get it all cleared up. (Luckily, there was no one in line behind us.) Why don't retailers understand.....DON'T MAKE PEOPLE STAND IN LONG LINES TO GIVE YOU THEIR MONEY. Simple. Beloved was dropping 800 bucks in their lap. Bing. They had to do no work..they didn't have to coach him through the different doors and the advantages and disadvantages of them. They just had to ring up a sale. And they couldn't get that right.

I made the comment that if WE were as....not efficient at our jobs as what we experienced today.....well, we just aren't allowed to be. And sometimes I find it so frustrating, to be surrounded by a world of idiots.

After Home Despot, we ended up grocery shopping. T-Bones on the grill tonight, with cucumber salad and corn on the cob. YUM. In case you don't have it, here's the recipe for cucumber salad...it's a rough idea, but it's SO simple.

Peel however many cucumbers, then put them in a bowl and salt them well. Let them sit for an hour or so. RINSE WELL IN COLD WATER. THEN RINSE AGAIN. This wilts them and takes the burpiness and bitterness out.

Throw in some sliced onions (I like Vidalia), some dill, a little vinegar (I like to mix white and red wine), and some sugar (teaspoon or so). Sprinkle paprika on top if you like. Chill. Eat. Yum. It's great in summer....and even better the next day.

Laters....
