Dialing for dollars
Our fund drive has begun. I'm not at work yet, so I am still relatiely untouched by the insanity. Here's some general info if you're a public radio or tv fan-- First of all, staff people don't like the drives any more than listeners. They have their fun moments, but they are colossal pains in the butt. However, that's how pubcasting raises the majority of their funds...from the people who use the service. If you're unhappy about a drive "messing up" your programming, just go somewhere else. Don't call us and bitch at us. Also, don't use "my tax dollars pay for this, so I'm paying already" as your argument for not contributing. In the case of my station, it works out to like 35 cents per person of tax money. Woo. If you rely on the service, please contribute something. Research indicates that only 10-20% of listeners actually contribute. If that number could be bumped up to even 50%, drives would be shorter, and maybe less frequent. Treat it like a subscription, just like cable, or the paper, or magazines. Forty or sixty bucks a year....a bargain. And you can get cool coffee mugs, too. Finally, if you're not familiar with National Public Radio, find your local station and give it a listen. You might like it. www.npr.org Well. Guess I'm ready to hit the trenches today. One good thing...there are usually Krispy Kremes during a fund drive....
